Intent

At Matlock Bath Holy Trinity CofE Primary School our aim is to develop happy, young people with enquiring minds, a spirit of curiosity, respect for themselves, others and the environment. We readily work together in partnership with each other, with home and the wider community – learning and flourishing through Christian Values.

We achieve our aims by living the curriculum, through both our academic and extended opportunities. The academic curriculum is based on the ten 'Big Ideas' of Humankind, Nature, Processes, Place and Space, Creativity, Comparison, Investigation, Significance, Materials and Change.

Humankind

Understanding what it means to be human and how human behaviour has shaped the world.

Processes

Understanding the many dynamic and physical processes that shape the world.

Creativity

Understanding the creative process and how everyday and exceptional creativity can shape the world.

Investigation

Understanding the importance of investigation and how this has led to significant change in the world.

Materials

Understanding the properties of all matter, living and non-living.

Nature

Understanding the complexities of the plant and animal species that inhabit the world.

Place and space

Understanding the visual, cultural, social, and environmental aspects of places around the world.

Comparison

Understanding how and why things are the same or different.

Significance

Understanding why significant people, places, events and inventions matter and how they have shaped the world.

Understanding why and how things have changed over time.

Mission statement

We endeavour to enable all children to achieve their fullest potential in a supportive environment. Our children often say that “school feels like a family” – a reflection of the values of cooperation, support, acceptance and friendship that we seek to promote.

General principles

Our curriculum will give children the opportunity to:

Purpose

We believe that the children at Matlock Bath Holy Trinity learn through everything they do and achieve, whether it be through academic study, social interactions or self-awareness.

Purpose

Matlock Bath Holy Trinity CofE Primary School is a Church of England School and its Christian values underpin our curriculum and what we want our children to achieve.

Well-being

Our curriculum will give children the opportunity to:

• follow their own interests and be themselves
• recognise that people are good at different things
• build respectful friendships
• learn how to respect themselves and others
• learn in a peaceful and supportive environment
• develop self-esteem and confidence in their abilities

Purpose

Well being is of fundamental importance to our children and the adults in our school community. Happy and confident children make happy learners that will have more chance of leading a fulfilling and successful life.

Pupil voice

Our curriculum will give children the opportunity to:

• take part in democratic activities across the curriculum
• contribute to planning their own learning
• make a positive contribution to the school and local community
• express their opinions on a range of different topics and issues
• take part in age-appropriate discussions
• explore ways of becoming an active citizen
• say what they like and dislike about their learning

Purpose

We want our children take an active part in school life and experience many opportunities to express themselves and lead change for the better within school and even the wider community.

Pedagogy

Our curriculum will be taught through a pedagogy that:

• promotes innovation and entrepreneurialism
• enables and fosters children’s natural curiosity
• enables children to reflect on and evaluate their learning
• promotes problem solving, creativity and communication
• excites, promotes and sustains children’s interest

Purpose

We want our children to be active and reflective learners. It is essential they have the skills, know how and motivation to be successful in their next step along their educational journey.

Enrichment

We will enrich our curriculum by:

• using quality resources in and out of the classroom
• welcoming parents and carers to take part in children’s learning and experiences
• holding specialist curriculum days or weeks
• developing partnerships with external providers that extend children’s opportunities for learning
• offering opportunities for children to learn outdoors
• providing on and off-site subject or topic related activities

Purpose

We believe the children should live a curriculum that extends beyond the classroom and staff will endeavour to source and use the best quality resources and provision possible to support them on their journey.
